Speedos, towels, or nothing at all!

Didn’t find tea towels at the market but bought a lovely hat and a Chewbacca beach towel.

It’s absolutely scorching hot here. Perfect day for a dunk in the surf.

“Just a fifteen-minute walk up that way,” says the park ranger.

He doesn’t know that we are not in the best shape. We struggle uphill on the road to nowhere in the summer heat, hoping that by some consolation we have burned off the kilogram of pig fat we have so far consumed on our trip. Incidental exercise is the saviour of our cardiovascular systems. Hot and knackered, the ocean was bloody amazing when we finally made it to the beach, minus the mosquito army attack.

It’s hard work doing nothing. So, we are in our pyjamas at 3:00 p.m. Apparently, when you are camping, you can wear anything you like, according to our elderly neighbours. Speedos[1], towels, or nothing at all if it takes your fancy. It’s very liberating.

Nanna napping in the Kombi, that’s the ticket. Back on the road tomorrow for two nights of nowhere booked and winging it.

It’s only been two days, but we are learning so much. We have learned the art of improvisation, and that material things are somewhat unnecessary:

1. Head and Shoulders is a great stain remover.

2. Octopus straps[2] make fantastic washing lines.

3. You can just eat the whole kilogram of bacon in one day when your fridge is piss-weak, and the ice has melted.

4. We are cramped inside a tiny Kombi, but we have the whole world as our back yard… big houses, widescreen televisions and air-con are not what makes you happy.

5. Trivia games with your best friend are more engaging and entertaining than any shite on television.

6. A swim in the ocean after a fifteen-minute self-inflicted boot camp session is a soul-lifting way to cool down when your Kombi “air-con” (a desk fan) isn’t quite cutting it.

[1] Itsy bitsy swimming briefs that leave little to the imagination, often termed “Budgie Smugglers.” [2] Strong elasticised straps with a hook at each end, for securing loads. Very handy.
