Great Ocean Road:
Whilst the weather was ordinary, the scenery was spectacular. We started our journey at Bells Beach, where Ern had high hopes of getting a surf in.
Ern: “It’s a bit choppy, what does that mean, babe?” (testing if Daphne pays attention to anything he says).
Daph: “The wind is offshore?”
Ern: *Deep breath… “ONshore.”
Ernest ponders for a moment: “The waves are a bit full.”
Daph: “Are you going in then?”
Ern: “Ummm... no.”
Daph suspects the chilly sixteen-degree water temperature has more to do with Ern’s decision than the onshore winds and full waves.
Next stop, Apollo Beach for lunch. An absolutely stunning area that the phone camera didn’t do justice to. We parked up the Kombi and had a picnic in the back before getting back on the road. Ernest didn’t see much of the scenery alongside The Great Ocean Road, having to concentrate on keeping the Kombi upright around the twisty bends whilst Daphne was snap-happy with her head out the window, soaking up the spectacular views. Ernest can look at the photos later.
Daphne almost had a heart attack twice on the journey when Ernest took hair-raising, cliff-edge bends at what felt like a hundred kilometres per hour. Ern reminds Daph that the Kombi is not capable of a hundred kilometres per hour.

Daphne saw more of the inside of her eyelids than the Cape Otway part of The Great Ocean Road, due to the twisty roads rocking her to sleep. Ernest woke her up at The Twelve Apostles rock formations... Spectacular!
Daph and Ern refused to pay the five dollars for a cuppa at The Twelve Apostles Kiosk. Choosing instead to set up camp in the Kombi and make their own tea, whilst Japanese tourists took photos of their home.
Daphne was amazed at both the outstanding views and the “No standing on the toilet seat” sign (with the accompanying stand-up toilet for the guests who prefer to stand rather than sit).
Now we begin our slow journey home. The Twelve Apostles was unfortunately as far as we could take the old girl in one day. She needs a rest between stints, and we have a long drive home over the next three days. And hopefully, more adventures to be had.
