The drive from Esperance to Denmark was a long one. That’s Denmark in WA, not Europe. That WOULD be a long drive!
Hour after hour of straight roads and dry landscape. Until Daph switched off from chief navigator duties and rested her eyes for fifteen minutes. We accidentally took a wrong turn off National Route One and found ourselves in the Stirling Range National Park. The Universe was looking after us by making Daph sleepy because this route was a pleasant change.
The landscape changed from flat, barren fields as far as the eye can see to stunning mountain ranges rising up in a blueish hue beyond fire-ravaged bushland. We’d almost forgotten about those devastating bushfires we had before COVID stole the limelight, but they are still evident around here. New life was bursting through the charred remains. It was breathtaking.
We headed back down to Albany to rejoin Route One and followed the coastal drive. Rolling green hills, dotted with lakes, and the happiest livestock you will ever see. Ern surmised this is “Over Fifties Luxury Living
ws were actually frolicking! Life is great for cows in Denmark.
We arrived in Denmark just before sunset, and just in time for a change in the weather. The clouds dumped their load, and the gale-force winds stirred us up just for good measure. It was a good night for snuggling in the Kombi.
We haven’t had the best of luck since arriving in Denmark. Our main reason for stopping here was to visit the beautiful Green Pool and Elephant Rocks. But on arrival, we found that the William Bay National Park is closed for car park redevelopment. Daph had some inside information from a resident Dane about locally known sneaky backways into Elephant Rocks, but we were cut off at every pass and there was no way in. It’s times like these when Daph wonders what The Universe has as a better plan. Just accept it.
We did get to see the spectacular Lights Beach, which is an underdog when searching for places to visit here. Daph thinks that Elephant Rocks must be a sight to behold if somewhere as beautiful as Lights Beach hardly gets a mention. Oh well, it just wasn’t meant to be this time around.
We decided to head into the cute town centre and have a walk around the shops instead. Our local guide had recommended the wild mushroom pizza for lunch. Ern had previously heard of these Danish wild mushrooms, and considering the hippy feel of the town, he was quietly concerned he may be taking a trip down Psychedelic Lane. But bad luck again. The pizza place was closed on Mondays. We did find a fabulous toy store filled with vintage stuff that Daph and Ern love. We came away with yet more 1980s quiz games to while away our afternoon whilst snuggling in the Kombi.
Denmark will go back on the list of places to visit. We will come back through here again one day to experience the things we missed out on this time. Maybe the better plan is to leave some things to come back for.
Tomorrow, we are off to Prevelly via Margaret River.
